We had a two-day session on discernment with Brother Rey Allqn Balderosa, SC. It served as a reminder that spiritual discernment helps us awaken to the voice and presence of God. It was a wonderful experience to realize that discernment helps us sift through the various choices we have and thus enabling us to choose the best one. Balancing the use of both the head and the heart in discernment was part of our discussions, as we need to involve both our minds and hearts in decision-making. We viewed discernment as a lifelong process that enables us to explore our experiences, name their meanings, and live out those meanings in action.
In our daily experiences, discernment helps us be sensitive to the movements of our thoughts, imagination, emotions, desires, and feelings. It gives us the opportunity to reflect on them and understand where they come from and where they are leading us. As we continue our program here in Davao, this practice encourages us to ask ourselves each day: what am I longing for? It fosters a spirit of openness, a desire to surrender and receive God’s grace, and an attitude of listening and being attentive to the details of our lives. It has also helped us identify what is life giving for us and to recognize the needs of our congregation. All we ask for is a spirit of openness and the willingness to follow the whispers of the Spirit in connection with our mission.
