Kadayawan Experience

The greatness of a culture can be found in its festivals– Siddharth Katragadda

In Davao, one should not miss the most anticipated festival in the city: the Kadayawan Festival. This festival is celebrated by the locals to give thanks for the bountiful harvest and to honor their rich culture.

It was a privilege for us, as an international and intercultural community from Balay Euphrasie Davao, to glimpse the diverse features of the region highlighted in the various activities of the festival. On August 18, 2024, we joined the multitude of people—tourists and locals alike—who were present to witness the Indak-Indak sa Kadayawan, where diverse ethnic groups showcased their talents through a street dancing competition. We were mesmerized by the colorful costumes, vibrant music, and elaborate dance movements of the performers, which were greeted by cheers and applause from the crowd. The richness of tradition and the bounty of nature were depicted in the amazing parade of floats adorned with fresh fruits like mangosteen, durian, and lanzones, as well as vegetables, fresh flowers, and other indigenous crafts and materials, all exhibiting the people’s ingenuity. We were grateful to have experienced this wonderful part of the region’s culture, and it was significant to know that this festival is held in gratitude to our Creator, who is the Source of all that is.
