Sacred Heart Oakleigh students took part in a schools competition called TOURNAMENT OF MINDS.

This is a competition between schools who chose to participate. Schools are invited to elect three teams to take part in this tournament and each team is involved in three different ways – the Arts, Science and Mathematics. Each group has to either solve a Mathematical problem, create and demonstrate an experiment to solve a scientific problem or enact a story.

SHGC students in the section on stories was very involved. The proposition given to the team about three weeks ago was tell the story of a wise person they know in their school community and show why this person was chosen.

They had to prepare a 10 minute presentation and they had to use all the arts: dance, music, song, painting and drama.

To my joy they chose to tell the story Euphrasie and how important she and the RNDM Sisters are in our College life. Sadly, they didn’t see the requirement – the person must be alive and active today. So they decided to tell a story of ME!!!

Firstly they had to interview me for 15 minutes and learn about how I heard of Euphrasie Barbier, what attracted me to her etc. I was asked so many questions – that I couldn’t keep up with them. They recorded the interview and I hope that they have deleted it now, then they got to work all their work had to be original – composed by them – including the music, song, dance and artwork. Teachers or parents were not allowed to do things for them – just encourage and at times advise. The story was presented in three parts. Firstly there was the story the story of Euphrasie and dream she had to work for women and children in remote parts of the world. Then came my story of how I heard about Euphrasie and how I chose to follow her. Finally they demonstrated how they have caught the original dream of Euphrasie from me and how they try to live it in their lives. They painted the three scenes. The ballet dance of Euphrasie and then of me and finally of all of them was exquisite. One part of the dance about the dream of Euphrasie involved lifting one smaller girl up high over their heads and she appeared to be gracefully flying.

I was very moved and amazed by the whole performance – in fact, I was humbled and proud of our Sisters and our story. What surprised me most was their awareness of Euphrasie, and RNDM Mission. It was a joy. If they win they will have to do another performance. But this time they will only have an hour to create their response to the question that will be given to them.

It is an amazing competition and shows the ability of the students not only to be creative – but to be able to interpret, cooperate together and enjoy what they are doing. Our group today certainly did that.
